Lesson learned is that all plays should be of the same unit. I've said this many times and it's hard to do but this lesson must be followed.
Tonight is Fight Night and we have Dr Jay @drjayh making his picks for UFC on Fox:
Demian Maia versus Carlos Condit
This is an intriguing fight! Maia is a top level, perhaps THE top level, ground fighter in the UFC, who has been able to raise his striking skills better than most jujitsu trained fighters. Condit is an ex-champion with very good striking and elusive footwork.
Pick: Damian Maia by submission of Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit in the third round.
Anthony Pettis versus Charles Oliveira
Pettis was a very good fighter when he began his career. His fight-winning springing off the cage head kick that led to his win over Benson Henderson is an epic UFC highlight reel. Lately, he has not shown his early career skills. I'm not sure why, but he does not engage with as strong an offense and has become more defense oriented. Perhaps it's who is managing his training. Oliveira is a solid all-around skilled fighter.
Pick: Oliveira by decision
Page VanZant versus Bec Rawlings
Bec Rawlings is a good reliable scrapper. Page "12 Gauge" VanZant is a pretty skilled fighter, although somewhat of a young novice at 22 y/o to the UFC scene. She was doing pretty well until she ran into Rose "Thug" Namajunis in her last fight, who beat her badly. Since then Page took some time off from training and got second place in Dancing With the Stars. With that, I'm sure she received many offers to use her good looks for other things than a punching bag. I imagine Bec and maybe half her BFFs want Bec to win. The rest of the populace is pulling for Page. I figure if Page is crazy enough to want to still fight, than I am crazy enough to pick her for the win.
Pick: VanZant by submission second round
Joe Lauzon versus Jim Miller
Here are two tough old veterans of the UFC fight game. Both have had their big wins and loses. I needed to use the, "how did they do against Diego Sanchez" litmus test to decide this one.
Pick: Joe Lauzon by decision.
On to my other plays...
The Bears are not a good football team. Spending some bonus cash on the Chiefs in the first half.
Santana has been great and I'm getting a half a run with plus money
Go Cubs Go
More bonus cash on the Colts to outplay the Iggles for the first half.
Ravens should not have a problem outscoring the Lions (bonus cash)
Favorable over ump (10-4) (6-3 night games) in Florida today
Quintana is 17-6, 8-2 at night and 10-2 at home for the first 5 under.
Fading the Angles again
Giants should be able to outscore the Jets in the first half (bonus cash)
Favorable over ump (13-9) (6-4 at night) in Texas tonight
Carrasco has been good lately Griffin has not
Final thought about my NFL picks. Since I'm using bonus cash I went with the spread since there was less juice. However with such short spreads and only playing the first half I recommend taking the money line to protect against a tie at the half.
